Getaway on the island of Oléron
The island of Oleron is so vast and rich in discoveries that it's almost impossible to make do with just half a day.
We offer 3 options for your morning or afternoon getaway on this island.
Option 1: The unmissable Chassiron lighthouse
First, we suggest you travel to the tip of the island to see the phare de Chassiron. Believe me, this is the number one place to see on this island. This is the second oldest lighthouse in France, after Cordouan. It is accompanied by a museum. So you can either be satisfied with the outdoor tour and the surrounding area. Or you can take the time to learn more about its history by visiting the museum.
Option 2: Birds' Marsh and Fort Royer
First, let's head to the Bird Marsh. Located a little further into the heart of the island, this marsh is home to a variety of different bird species. This 50-hectare park was set up to safeguard the island's wildlife. Weakened and sick animals are cared for before being released back into the wild. You can visit this huge park of 1,000 discoveries from April to November for €4.50 per adult and €2.80 per child.
The Fort Royer oyster-farming site is the next stop on your journey around Oleron. Known for its forty or so colourful huts, this natural site will amaze you with its wild plants and calm coastline of bewitching colours. The site is open from early February to mid-November. Events for the general public are organised throughout the summer. Take part in guided tours, walks or oyster-opening workshops.
Option 3: A boat trip to get the day off to a good start
For an unusual trip to Oléron, don't miss La Marcelle. This famous pirate ship dating from 1935 only leaves twice during the day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. But don't worry, even though it's a little dated, this ship has been renovated and is guaranteed to keep you safe during your journey. With Captain René, the local Cousteau, I can assure you that you are in good hands.
Hang on tight, though, as the waves can be a bit rough!
During your trip, take a look at Fort Boyard. Do you know its history?
Before becoming the setting for an iconic popular TV show, it's worth remembering that this building was originally built to house prisoners.
Abandoned during the war, it was then classified as a historic monument in 1950 before experiencing the life we know today.
In the distance, the island of Aix awaits you. The Marcelle allows you to see the coastline, but you can also make a stopover there and be brought back by the same boat at the end of the day: The Ile d'Aix is a real piece of paradise and can be enjoyed in a full day.
The island of Oléron is also perfectly suited to people who simply want to lay their towel on the beach and get a tan. With its magnificent stretches of sand, lazing around has never been so enjoyable.
