Or fishing on foot!

Or, at low tide, explore the secrets of the coastline that the sea reveals only to those who take the time. Armed with a bucket, a 3-pronged rake and a curious eye, set off to discover the cockles, clams and prawns nestling between the sand and rocks around Château d'Oléron. Fishing on foot is a fun activity, accessible to all, where the sea is revealed in a different light. There's something for everyone, from children to adults, from meticulous digging to lots of laughs.

Don't forget to check the tide times on the internet or at the tourist office to make the most of the activity.

Getaway at sea

To extend this natural interlude, why not embark on a guided sea tour? Starting at the port of Château d'Oléron, this one-hour family tour takes in the local oyster industry, the old wharves, Fort Louvois and an unusual passage under the Oléron bridge before skirting the imposing ramparts of the citadel. A soothing and rewarding experience, punctuated by the guide's anecdotes and the caress of the salty wind.

💡To wit:

  • Prices: €12/adult; €6/child (3-12 years); free (under 3 years)
  • Departures are generally around 11 a.m.
  • Don't forget to pack a jumper; even in summer, the sea breeze can be chilly on board.

An iodised lunch

To round off a morning full of discoveries, take a seat at La Cabane du Sans Souci, just a stone's throw from the sea. Sitting facing the horizon, your feet almost in the water, let yourself be seduced by the simplicity of freshly opened oysters, accompanied by a glass of local white wine. Here, everything is calm, fresh and tasty. A moment suspended in time to fully appreciate the art of living in Oleron.
