Saint Nazaire
Cast off! Set sail for Saint-Nazaire, where the ocean flirts with steel, where boats are born and where the adventure begins for you! A 50-minute drive and you're in the heart of the marshes (modifiable zone: 35 minutes from the campsite in Pénestin).
A morning in the marshes
Start the day at the Brière, an immense nature reserve of reeds, still waters and silent boats. You can opt for a trip in a traditional barge, or simply stroll along the paths. At the Chaussée Neuve harbour, meet Anthony MAHE, who will take you on a walk to discover the fauna, flora and traditions of the marsh (€8/adult and €4/child under 12 for 45 minutes). If you prefer to go on your own, hire a boat and paddles (unlimited duration, €18 to €35 per boat depending on the number of people) and off you go!
Younger walkers will certainly prefer a gentle 6km stroll (1h30) to discover all the charm of the Brière. A peaceful itinerary, starting from the port of Chaussée Neuve, which reveals all the poetry of this area. For the more adventurous, there's a 10km loop starting from the port of Rozé. As you cross the island of Frédun, marvel at the wild landscapes and horizons as far as the eye can see.
After this bucolic interlude, calmly set off again for Saint-Nazaire. Just 25 minutes and you can breathe in the sea air.
💡If you come on a Tuesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, you can go to the market on the Place du Commerce, in the Halles centrales. This time, you'll be immersed in the local atmosphere of a building inaugurated in 1958, where the light illuminates the fresh produce.
An immersion in taste
At lunchtime, it's time to regain your strength and take your taste buds on a journey! For those who love the atmosphere of a seaside brasserie, settle down at the Bistrot du Grand Pavois: a generous menu of seafood and revisited classics.
Fancy a gentler, more local interlude? Let yourself be seduced by the charm of Le Moulin Blanc, a crêperie nestling in a peaceful setting: fresh cider, crispy galettes and fluffy crêpes.
An afternoon in the belly of the maritime industry
The afternoon begins in the heart of the port, where history meets innovation. Start at 2pm at the Escal'Atlantic museum (Adults €15; Concessions €13; 4-17 years €7.5; free for under-4s), a former submarine base. This immersive museum will plunge you into the legend of the transatlantic liners: reconstructed cabins, mythical decks, engine room and deckchairs facing the sea. Just 15 minutes on foot and you can continue your visit to the submarine Espadon (Adults €12; Concessions €10; 4-17 years €6; free for under-4s), a vestige of the deep, a fascinating black silhouette still anchored in the concrete of history.
Then head outside to see the Atlantic shipyards, cathedrals of metal where the giants of the sea are born.
💡Wandering around the city centre, you can discover the walls of Saint-Nazaire, dressed in street art... Have fun spotting them! These touches of urban poetry are a perfect illustration of this city of a thousand faces.
A last look at the horizon
Head for the ocean! Choose your mood: sunbathe on the wide beach, take a contemplative break in front of the famous fisherman's hut or explore a wilder cove hidden behind the paths.
After this crazy day, take a few moments to relax and admire the beauty of your surroundings... Then head back to the campsite, where we can't wait to hear all about your adventures!
