The Gruissan salt marshes: a sensory immersion experience

Head for the Salins de Gruissan, one of the most emblematic landscapes on the coast. Here, the paths run alongside vast pools of pink-tinted water, offering a spectacle as poetic as it is exotic. The walk is 2 km long (1h15), perfect for all ages, and led by an enthusiastic guide who will reveal the secrets of salt and the trade of the salt worker. It can also be done on an electric scooter, for a more dynamic and fun approach. But be careful! You must be at least 14 years old, know how to ride a bike and wear closed shoes.

💡Rates

  • On foot: €11.80/adult (over 14); €9.20/child (8-13); free (under 7)
  • By scooter: 1h30 - La Randonnée du Salin - €41/person; 1h - La Balade du Salin - €31/person

Timetable :

  • On foot: in July and August departures every day at 10.30am, 11am, 3pm, 4.30pm and 6pm.
  • Scooters: in July and August depart daily at 10.30am, 4pm or 5.30pm.

After your visit, treat yourself to a well-deserved break at the Salin de Gruissan ice cream parlour, with a direct view over the rosy waters. Don't miss their Fleur de Sel de Gruissan caramel ice cream: a creamy, generous local delicacy.

The heart of Gruissan and the Tour Barberousse

The afternoon continues in the historic centre of Gruissan, with its narrow streets, colourful houses and ancient fountains, all inviting you to take your time. Then climb up to the Tour Barberousse, the last vestige of the medieval castle.

💡To know

  • Open all year round from 8am to 6pm.
  • Access is free
  • The visit is free of charge.
  • In summer, a guided tour is offered every Wednesday from 5.30pm to 7pm (prices: €8/adult; €2/child).

From the summit, the panorama is breathtaking: views of the ponds, the salt marshes and, in the distance, the glittering Mediterranean.

💡Did you know?Just a few minutes away, the area of chalets on stilts was used as the setting for Jean-Jacques Beineix's film 37°2 in the morning.

A dinner of local flavours

Finish the day with a fine meal in authentic surroundings. Two addresses are particularly recommended. Casa Marina offers refined cuisine based on local produce, but is closed on Wednesdays (please note this if you are coming for the guided tour of the Tower). La Belle Adresse, open from 7pm to 10pm, offers a convivial setting and an appetising menu. Reservations are recommended.

Between flavours, landscapes and heritage, Gruissan offers you a rich, luminous and exotic interlude. At the end of the day, take to the road again with a light heart and salty memories etched in your mind.
